Out of the box I noticed how wonderful the bottle is shaped and the atomizer has a great strong spray. The opening isnt my favorite, but still very good. The REAL magic happens with the dry down. Unreal. The fragrance has great stamina and I found myself regularly smelling myself throughout the day

While Frederic Malle is noticably overpriced for what it is, surpassing the prices of even the highest end of perfume (Areej La Dore, Bortnikoff come to mind), Portrait of a Lady to me and many others is the quintessential rose fragrance and while I wouldn't buy it for myself, it makes a generous gift to the lady in your life if you want to go "all out." She will definitely be happy to respond to the people who ask "What are you wearing?" with "Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle", especially when the person who asked goes home later that day and looks up the retail price. Good for a gift, but there are way better and higher quality perfumes if you're looking to spend these prices, especially after the Estee Lauder acquisition, but if you (or her) absolutey adore it and have to have it, then the price is the price.

Definitely can get the vibe of an “Old Lady” upon that first spray, it almost comes across as a dirty rose but then as time goes on, it progreses and the into this beautiful scent. Hard to describe, but I would say timeless, beautiful. Earthy, woody, floral and cozy all in one. Almost like a rose lost in the woods after a stormy night and you mix all those unique scents into one. Thats what this becomes. If you are able to learn to love it, it will become a favorite.
